Abstract

That magnetism can result in chromosomal aberrations was first described in 1973. Subsequent studies have confirmed beyond doubt that the fields of 8000-10000 Oe result in uncoiling of a chromosome. The opening of gyres, loosening of chromonemata and removal of histones, as studied by modified orcein - glucose banding method is dependent on variable responses of chromosomes. Among the root meristems, cells of Allium cepa, show predominant effects of magnetism when compared with Vicial faba, Allium cepa and Pisum sativum cells.

Another important but selective outcome of magnetism has been observed to be the origin of new category of chromosomes in certain cells. We have repeatedly observed this in several trials since 1973. The only parallel situation of visualising the appearance of a nongenomic-chromosome in plant cells has been met with after effects of a carcinogen in other experiments. Besides these observations, magnetism has opened new parameters in studies of chromosomal aberrations and mutagens.
